Episode 1: Diversifying with Jenny Ryan

In this first proper episode, I talk with Jenny Ryan about the projects she has going on—a truly diverse array. She’s blogging professionally, runs the urban craft fair Felt Club, has a new book out, and just teamed up with a brick-and-mortar store. And after we talk about all that, we geek out over Buffy, Dollhouse, and Freaks and Geeks.

More Than Just Duplicitous and Evil: Joss Whedon on Crafts and Craftiness

The rivalry between knitters and crocheters is “an age-old war, like the vampires and werewolves,” said Joss Whedon, creator of such television favourites as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, and the internet’s own Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. If only I’d known that when I was preparing to speak with him last month. Now I’m just left wondering why I hadn’t assumed from the start that he’d be well acquainted with yarn crafts. I would have prepared way more specific and craft-geeky questions for him about crafts of all sorts. (Joss, if you’re reading this and want to follow up, let me know.)

Now for this clip. When we taped the second season of Knitting Daily TV in September, I used my iPhone as a microphone (and it worked surprisingly well). Here’s a chat co-host Eunny and I had with Karen, our makeup artist on the show. We started each day of taping sitting on Karen’s stool; she’s remarkably fun to spend time with in the early morning, and here she tells us a little about doing makeup for television. (Note: I said Annie [Bakken] is a producer; she joked that she just got a pay raise because her exact title is “segment producer”. My bad.)
